Course Objectives

The course provides an exciting opportunity to study various mobile platforms and multimedia applications that run on mobile and Internet devices, acquire relevant skills and develop an understanding of the issues surrounding mobile technology and Internet.

This course is also aimed to integrate the Principles of Symbian OS curriculum. Graduates from this course are encouraged to take Accredited Symbian Developer test. The mobile technology and Symbian OS system are relatively recent development. Only during the last decade, businesses, political organisations, lobby groups, media organisations, artists, educators and others have attempted to use them as a major tool for communication. Although there are some similar courses offered in other universities on different aspects of the mobile technology, this course is designed particularly for those who want to get familiar with the Symbian OS principles and are interested in practical mobile applications development.

The MSc provides students with opportunities to develop:

  • an understanding of mobile technology and mobile applications development;
  • an understanding of Symbian and other major mobile operating systems and the mobile applications development.
  • an appreciation of mobile project development issues, including design, development, communication, management, usability and related issues;
  • the research skills necessary to contribute to research in the mobile and Internet industry, or to carry out academic research in the mobile subject area..

The PgDip and PgCert elements of the MSc programme aim to provide students with useful subsets of knowledge and skills provided by the MSc course, as detailed below. The modules concerned will be useful to students who wish to add to their understanding of the development aspects of Internet applications without covering as much as the whole MSc programme. These may appeal to mature students in the industry or to recent graduates who wish to explore their interest in the subject before committing themselves to a complete MSc programme or who wish to add specific elements to their learning experience and academic base in the field.
